Networking Solutions

The term "network" has many different meanings depending on the person or company, and the context in which the network is being used. One well accepted definition is "a configuration of data processing devices and software connected for information storage and interchange". Then an "internetwork" might be defined as "communication between data processing devices on one network and other possibly dissimilar devices on another network".

Every day a legion of new computer products is unleashed, some might say dumped, on the North American business. A good many of these products rehash existent technology in new ways. For example, copper as opposed to fiber optics. Others are truly innovative such as Web publishing. We have listed some areas where our expertise might be of interest to your company, but we are by no means limited to these applications.

Local and Wide Area Networks

Our network engineers can provide networks ranging from simple departmental systems to complex enterprise configurations. All systems are tested with manufacturers diagnostics and third-party utilities. We will work with your proprietary software people to ensure that the system performs as expected, and there is no petty finger-pointing.

Our wide area network experience ranges from connecting two small offices over a dedicated line to linking multi-location sites of a Fortune 10 corporation. The latter installation required highly sophisticated datacom concepts and devices using Cisco and Wellfleet routers and coordination with carriers.

Messaging and Email

Messaging is the ability of a network to accept, store and forward messages from one user or application to another. Among the most highly regarded software packages are Novell GroupWise, Microsoft MS Mail, and Lotus CC:Mail. D.I.S.C. has extensive experience installing and maintaining all of these packages. We can suggest the software that would best suit your company's requirements.

Remote Access and Control

Remote control software allows off-site users access to the computer network. A dial-in line is required for each user. A number of communication packages such as Procom and Carbon Copy are widely used and handle most needs.

Multiple remote users require a more robust operating system. The users must be able to simultaneously access and run programs by use of a dedicated remote access server. Citrix is one of the more highly acclaimed systems that is provided by D.I.S.C..

Lotus Notes

Among various groupware offerings Lotus Notes is considered the standard. Notes is a groupware product that allows you and your colleagues to share or exchange work in a collaborative environment. A Notes database is a collection of related information stored in the form of documents that can be accessed in very productive formats. The databases are stored on a central Notes server which can be linked and replicated.

Wireless Communications

Some networked systems do not use any cable. Or they do use cable to connect two segments of the same network located some distance from the another.

Consider the following: a LAN with the server and the accounting portion of the network in one building, and a second building within a mile with the engineering portion of the network. Digging a trench and laying cable is not looked upon with any great enthusiasm. We would suggest using a Solectek AirLAN microwave system to link the segments and the network operates in a routine manner.

Disaster Recovery

Most everyone agrees that disaster recovery is important, but it still is one of the most neglected areas in a computer installation. One of the reasons for this situation is the relative newness of networks. There is even some disagreement as to what disaster recovery encompasses. Suffice to say that a disaster plan allows a company to recover quickly from a potentially serious loss. This is an area that warrants strict attention from anyone that is reliant on or responsible for a data processing operation.
